I recognize the efficiency and usefulness of bulletpoints, and how much more likely people are to read my articles if I keep them short and not walls of text, but I’m here today to say that it simply doesn’t suit my writing style and I will henceforth abandon the pursuit.
. . .
I’m sure a few of you dear devoted readers are scratching your heads. Allow me to explain.
During the writer’s conference I attended about a week ago (can’t believe it’s been a week already!), one of the lectures mentioned that viewers preferred reading articles which were formatted like this:
Headline Wordy Words
- These are words
- These are also words
- Wow more words!
Instead of. . .
Words here, words there, so many words, why did the writer put so many words in one sentence? Ah it keeps going! When does it end? I’m running out of random nonsense to say. I’ll meme. Yeet. Yolo. Will Thor ever yeet his hammer like he yeeted Loki? Is the past tense of yeet yought? Or maybe youghten. He youghten the football. Yes that’s good.
In my last article, I tried bulletpoints to see if (a) it boosted views, or (b) if I liked it. Honestly, I haven’t noticed much of a difference. But wait! One instance of experimentation shouldn’t define my conclusion! Well, ha-ha – I DID use it more than once.
Before you go analyze the rest of my posts here on The Eurothian Gazette, I’ll save you some time and tell you the rest of my experimentation happened on my personal Facebook page. While I got lots more comments on these posts than usual (I’m so unpopular), I believe it was the topic and not the format which served me so well. . . . That and I’m friends with a bunch of nice people who like me (yes, I know, it’s surprising, isn’t it?).
So! Because bulletpoints have proved inefficient for me, and because I can be equally as sarcastic and punny in block text, I will maintain my usual style/format. It’s silly, anyway, to do something difficult/less fun for myself. If I’m gonna do this nonsense, I’m gonna do it the way I’m best at and enjoy myself while doing so.
Anyway, why did any of you need to know all of that?
Well, you read my posts. You’re somewhat engaged and invested here.
Otherwise there was no reason besides I forgot it was Tuesday (hey don’t judge I’m still on vacation!) and had to come up with something to post.
While I’m here, I better go ahead and update everyone on upcoming novels.
I’ve decided to try to go the traditional publishing route instead of self-publishing, since a few dear writer friends (The Word Weavers – go check them out!) told me the prologue to Turbulence was good enough for, well, that. This means. . . dare I say it? It’ll take longer for it to come out. In fact, it might never come out, depending on what responses I get from publishers/editors. But hey! Let’s be optimistic, right? Anyway, the plan is to let my final beta reader finish her reading, then I’ll do my edits, a final proof, and hopefully get it sent out to a few publishing houses. Preferably publishing houses which aren’t reliant on me having a giant platform. I legit only have 78 likes on my Facebook author page (which constitutes as a platform), when many publishers want you to have hundreds of thousands of followers.
So. . . we’ll see how it ends up.
Maybe I’ll try this for a few years and hit it big.
Maybe I’ll decide to go back to self-publishing for Ranguvar’s story, then try the traditional route again with other novels.
Maybe I’ll find something better to do.
Anyway, it’s a pleasure having all 78 of you along for the ride!
