On Writers and Conferences, and Writers’ Conferences

So I went to my first-ever writers’ conference last Saturday!

Pros:

  • Learned lots of stuff
  • Found a cool, new-to-me author
  • Got advice from a fiction author who told me about “Realm Makers” (more on this in a minute)
  • Everyone was older than me (Woo experience!)

Cons:

  • They want me to do email marketing. D:<
  • …everyone was older than me… (harder to make connections)

Overall, my favorite parts of the day (no, it wasn’t lunch, though it was bbq and it was tasty) were the two classes taught by Steven James. He’s a pretty well-known author, with a master’s degree in storytelling. Don’t know how he got that degree? Neither do I, or anyone else, really. Don’t ask.
He’s published a variety of fiction novels (including an 11 book series, The Bowers Files) as well as several writing help books – one of which I now own! I’ll include a link to his site at the end of this post.
You might be saying, “Well that’s cool and all, but I wanna know what Realm Makers is.” (or, you might not care and that’s okay too… [ya meanie])

Well I’m glad you asked! (Or didn’t. You’re still about to read about it.)

Realm Makers is a nerd’s convention. More specifically, a Christian sci-fi writer’s convention. Yes, it’s popular; and yes, it’s expensive. It’s held in July, in St. Louis, MO (oh hey that’s where I am right now…too bad I’m a month early…), and lasts three (3) days. That’s three whole days of nerding out with likeminded, Christian sci-fiers. (Yes I made up a word).

Anyway, here’s the link I promised, plus a link to the Realm Makers website.

I would explain things more in depth, but my travel buddies want food. Thus, pizza must be acquired.

‘Til next time!
