Writer’s Block

I read a post somewhere recently that writer’s block comes from the writer being afraid of their work being judged by the outside world. If that’s so, I can’t imagine what I’m afraid for. Currently, my mind is as blank as an unused sheet of paper, thus I sat here for a little while trying to come up with something original to write about.

“But wait!” you might cry, “Don’t bloggers/writers always have it all planned out on what they’re going to post on their blog/website for the week?!?!?!”

Yeah, no. Just playing this by ear. But this writer’s block did, evidently, give me something to write about (as evidenced by the title). So how does one overcome this intermittent disease? Well the only way I’ve found–and yes, it sounds contradictory–is to start writing. Sometimes doing something else will cause inspiration to spark, but more often than not–if writing is a career for you–you don’t have the luxury of time. Deadlines exist. Thus, make it a point to write just one sentence. Sometimes that one sentence will be enough of a jump-start…if not: write another.

After a paragraph, if your motor isn’t up and running–or if your brain isn’t immediately firing with hundreds of different twists and turns for the fiction or non-fiction you’re planning–then you might have to take a break. Just don’t get discouraged. Discouragement breeds the loss of motivation, and the loss of motivation can be the worst thing to happen to a writer (or to anyone, for that matter).

“But what if I can’t even write a sentence??” says someone near the back, who clearly hasn’t been listening.

Then write a word. Build off of it. Make it random and see what you come up with. It will definitely be worthy of a story if it’s random enough and it makes sense. Lol.  Just have fun and enjoy yourself. If you can’t have fun, then why bother? Why torture your eyes and brain with this queer hobby?

TL;DR: Write to overcome writer’s block. And listen up when you’re sitting near the back.
